Top Five Reasons to Purchase Long-Term Care Insurance
By Lou Ann Thombley, Owner of 4 Seasons Home Care
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing many families to develop or re-visit their plan on aging. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that, among adults, the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk. People aged 85 and older are at greatest risk from severe illness due to COVID-19. To protect friends and family members in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other types of senior living facilities, CDC advises that long-term care facilities restrict visitors and limit activities within the facility to keep residents safely distanced from each other.
While these methods can help with the spread of COVID-19 in these facilities, it can also be isolating for residents, which can in turn cause negative health effects. Consequently, many families are turning to home care as the preferred senior care option, and purchasing long-term care insurance can be an effective way to make that possible. Long-term care insurance has many benefits, but here are our top five reasons that purchasing such insurance should be considered:
1. Receive Care in Your Own Home
Long-term care insurance offers something so valuable it is difficult to quantify: choices. Many seniors want to live in their home for as long as possible, but they find that at some point they need help. Long-term care insurance is one of the few financial vehicles offering a home care benefit, and many of our clients at 4 Seasons Home Care have long-term care insurance to cover all or nearly all of their home care needs.
2. Preserve Your Financial Health
The cost of healthcare is on the rise, and there is no end in sight. Purchasing long-term care insurance can bring families peace of mind that they’re covered in the event of an unforeseen medical event for which long-term care is needed.
3. Planning Early Will Cost You Less
Health economists tout purchasing long-term care insurance when you are middle-aged as a smart financial choice because it actually costs you less in the long run. Long-term care insurers can actually deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions or poor health, unlike standard health insurance. The older people are when they purchase long-term care insurance, the more costly the premiums, if they are even eligible.
4. Maintain Quality of Life
It can be devastating when a person ages and can no longer live independently in the home, but there is a strong desire not to live in a senior facility. People’s homes can be a great source of comfort, and it is not uncommon for health to decline when care is provided outside of the home. Purchasing long-term care insurance can preserve the quality of life that people deserve.
5. Strengthen Family Bonds
Long-term care insurance enables people to receive care in the home, in accordance with the terms of the policy. This can be in the person’s own home, or the person may choose to live with a child or other family member and receive care there. In times where many adults work full-time outside the home, without the provision of home care, this arrangement would not be possible. Long-term care insurance offers the financial flexibility for families to spend time together while receiving optimal home care.
